The short answer

Google Merchant Center suspends accounts when it decides the store or its product data breaks a Shopping policy. The most common cause is misrepresentation: missing or inconsistent business details, unclear shipping or return terms, prices or stock that do not match the website, or claims Google considers unreliable. To fix it, read the exact issue in Merchant Center under Products, Needs attention, fix the website and feed so they are transparent and consistent, verify your identity if asked, and request a review. Google says reviews can take up to 7 business days. Use your appeals carefully, because unsuccessful reviews can trigger cool-down periods that get longer each time.

What a suspension means

A suspended account cannot show products in Shopping ads or free listings, so a business that relies on Google Shopping loses that traffic until the issue is resolved. Google separates issues into two kinds:

  • Product disapprovals affect individual items. You fix the product data and resubmit.
  • Account-level issues affect everything. For most violations, Google sends a warning first, with a 7- or 28-day warning period to fix the problem. For egregious violations, the account can be suspended with no warning.

Under Google’s misrepresentation policy, unacceptable business practices, coordinated deceptive practices, and dishonest pricing and transaction conditions are treated as egregious: the account is suspended on detection and reinstated only in compelling circumstances. Unavailable offers, manipulated media and unreliable claims get at least 7 days’ warning before suspension.

Common reasons accounts get suspended

  • Misrepresentation from missing business information. No physical address, no phone number, a contact form only, or details that differ between the website, Merchant Center and Google Business Profile.
  • Hidden or unclear costs. Shipping, taxes, recurring charges or return fees that appear only late in checkout or not at all.
  • No clear return and refund policy, or a policy that contradicts what the feed says.
  • Price and availability mismatches between the feed and the landing page, often caused by sales, currency settings or stale feeds.
  • Unavailable offers: advertising products or promotions you cannot fulfill, or implying faster or local shipping than you provide.
  • Unreliable claims: “miracle” results or health claims that go against scientific consensus.
  • Website quality problems: placeholder text, broken links, a checkout that does not work, or no secure (SSL) checkout.
  • Restricted or prohibited products such as counterfeit goods or products under other Shopping policies.

Step-by-step fix

  1. Read the exact issue. In Merchant Center, go to Products, Needs attention, and open the setup and policy issues. Note which policy is named and which country it affects.
  2. Do not rush the appeal. You may get only one chance to say you disagree. Fix everything first.
  3. Audit your contact and business details. Use one business name everywhere. Show a physical address, phone number and email on the site, typically in the footer and on a Contact page. Match them to Merchant Center’s Business info and your Google Business Profile.
  4. Publish clear policies. Shipping (costs, destinations, delivery times), returns and refunds (window, condition, who pays return shipping), and privacy. Link them in the footer and at checkout, and enter the same terms in Merchant Center.
  5. Check prices and stock. Compare a sample of feed items with their landing pages, including sale prices and variants. Fix feed sync so updates happen often.
  6. Review claims. Remove exaggerated or medical claims from product titles, descriptions and images.
  7. Clean up the site: no placeholder text, working links, a working cart and secure checkout, an About page that explains who you are.
  8. Verify identity if Merchant Center asks. It is often required before you can request a review of an account-level suspension.
  9. Request a review. Choose “I fixed the issue” (or “I disagree” if you believe Google made a mistake, with supporting documentation), then submit. Google says it can take up to 7 business days.

Understand the cool-down rules

Google limits how often you can ask for reviews. According to Google’s help center, as of 2026:

  • You may have only one opportunity to disagree with an issue.
  • Once you have used the disagree option and attempted a fix, a cool-down period can start, during which the review button is greyed out.
  • If issues are not resolved by the second review attempt, a one-week cool-down may begin. It can get longer after each unsuccessful review, and Google support cannot shorten it.
  • During a 7- or 28-day warning period, you can request one courtesy review.

This is why it pays to fix everything thoroughly before the first request, rather than trying small changes one at a time.

Prevent it from happening again

  • Sign in to Merchant Center regularly. Google requires a sign-in at least once every 14 months to keep an account active, and checking monthly catches warnings early.
  • Keep feed updates frequent and automatic, especially around sales.
  • Have one person own policies and business details, so changes to address, phone or returns are made everywhere at once.
  • Review new products for claims and restricted categories before they go into the feed.
  • Follow Google’s trust recommendations: reviews and testimonials, an About page, linked social profiles and a verified Google Business Profile.

When to get help

Consider outside help if a review has already been rejected, if your products sit in a sensitive category such as health or supplements, or if Shopping drives a large share of revenue. A second look at the site often finds the issue faster than repeated appeals. Our guide to what Google Ads costs a small business helps you judge what lost Shopping traffic is worth.

Questions we hear

Why was my Google Merchant Center account suspended?

Usually for a policy issue such as misrepresentation: missing contact details, unclear shipping or returns, price or availability mismatches, or unreliable claims. Merchant Center names the policy under Products, Needs attention.

How long does a Merchant Center review take?

Google says it can take up to 7 business days. You receive emails when the review is requested and when it is complete.

Can a suspended Merchant Center account be reinstated?

Often, if you fix the issue and request a review. For egregious misrepresentation violations, Google reinstates accounts only in compelling circumstances, though you can appeal if you believe there was an error.

Should I open a new Merchant Center account after a suspension?

No. Fix the underlying issue and request a review. A new account does not fix what is wrong on your site, and Google’s misrepresentation policy treats coordinating across accounts or concealing your identity as an egregious violation.
