Custom website or template: when each is the right call

A template gets you online fast and cheap. A custom design fits how your buyers decide. Most businesses should pick based on what the site has to do.

Where the cost difference comes from

The short answer

Use a template when you are a newer business with a few services, a modest budget, and a site whose main job is to look credible when a referral checks you out. Choose a custom design when your site must win business against similar competitors, your services need explaining, or the site has to connect to other systems. A template costs less and launches faster. A custom site costs more but is built around your content, your buyers and your goals rather than someone else’s demo.

There is also a middle path many businesses miss: a custom design built on a solid, standard framework. More on that below.

What “template” and “custom” actually mean

  • Template (or theme). A pre-designed layout you buy or download, then fill with your content. WordPress has thousands in its theme directory and marketplaces sell many more. Website builders like Wix and Squarespace are template-based by design.
  • Custom design. A designer plans the site structure and page layouts around your services, your audience and your content, then a developer builds it. The design starts from a blank page, not a demo.
  • Customized template. A template with your colors, fonts and some layout changes. Often sold as “custom” when it is not. Ask which one you are getting.

Cost and speed compared

Template

Lower upfront cost. Faster to launch because layouts already exist. Works best when your content fits the template’s structure. Changing the structure later can cost as much as doing it right the first time.

Custom

Higher upfront cost for discovery, design and development. Takes longer: at JLB USA most custom WordPress sites launch in 6 to 10 weeks. Built to fit your content, so fewer workarounds later.

The cost difference comes from discovery and design time. With a template, someone else did that work for a generic business. With a custom site, it is done for yours. Our guide to small business website costs explains the other drivers, such as content, features and integrations.

The hidden costs of templates

Templates are not bad. But a few problems come up again and again.

  1. Bloat. Multipurpose themes ship with sliders, animations and dozens of layouts so they can sell to everyone. Much of that code loads on your pages even if you never use it, which can hurt speed and Core Web Vitals.
  2. Forced structure. Your content gets bent to fit the demo. Service pages end up thin because the layout has three short boxes, not the detail buyers need.
  3. Look-alike sites. Popular templates are used by thousands of businesses. A competitor may have the same one.
  4. Update risk. Template updates can break customizations, and some themes stop being updated. Check the update history and license terms before you buy.
  5. Accessibility gaps. Not every template is built to WCAG guidelines. Fixing that later is harder than building it in.

Where custom design pays off

  • Competitive search results. When several similar businesses compete for the same searches, structure matters. Custom page templates for each service and location make it easier to build pages that rank and convert.
  • Complex services. If buyers need to understand options, process or pricing factors before calling, the layout should be designed around those questions.
  • Integrations. Sending leads to a CRM, showing live availability, or connecting to an ERP is easier when the build plans for it from the start.
  • Redesigns of sites that already rank. A custom structure can be planned around the pages that bring in traffic, with redirects for the rest.
  • Brand-led businesses. When trust and premium positioning drive sales, a site that looks like everyone else’s costs you.

The middle option: custom design on a standard platform

Custom does not have to mean exotic. The most practical approach for many businesses is a custom design built on a widely used platform like WordPress. You get layouts designed for your business, plus the benefits of a standard platform: a large pool of developers, well-maintained plugins, simple editing for staff, and the freedom to move hosts or developers. This also avoids the opposite risk of a fully hand-coded site that only one developer understands.

A decision rule

Answer three questions:

  1. Do most of your new customers look you up online and compare you against similar businesses before calling?
  2. Do your services need more than a paragraph each to explain well?
  3. Does the site need to connect to another system, now or in the next two years?

If you answered no to all three, a well-chosen template is fine. If you answered yes to any of them, a custom design is likely to earn back its extra cost.

If you choose a template, choose well

  • Pick a lightweight theme with a recent update history and many active installs.
  • Test the demo on your phone and check its speed.
  • Map your actual pages and content to its layouts before buying.
  • Use as few plugins as possible.
  • Make sure you hold the license and the admin logins in your company’s name.

Two examples

Both businesses below are illustrative, not real clients.

A new bookkeeping practice. Three services, most clients from referrals, a small budget and a need to launch quickly. A clean, lightweight template with well-written service pages is the sensible choice. Spending heavily on custom design would not change how most clients find the firm.

A regional HVAC company with 40 employees. Competes with a dozen similar companies in search results, offers repair, replacement and maintenance plans across several cities, and wants service requests to flow into its scheduling software. A template would force all of that into a generic layout. A custom structure with dedicated templates for each service and service area, plus a planned integration, is likely to pay for itself in leads.

Most businesses sit somewhere between these two. The more your site has to compete and connect, the further toward custom you should move.

What to ask any provider

  • Is this design built from scratch for us, or a customized theme? If a theme, which one?
  • How many unique page layouts are included?
  • Who holds the theme or design license, and in whose name?
  • How will you keep the site fast as we add content?
  • Can we see the editing screen for a similar site you built?

Honest answers to these make quotes much easier to compare.

Questions we hear

Is a custom website worth the cost?

It is when your site has to win business against similar competitors, explain complex services or connect to other systems. For a simple credibility site, a good template is often enough.

How much more does a custom website cost than a template?

The difference comes from discovery and design time, plus custom development. Ranges vary widely by scope, so compare quotes on the same list of pages, features and content.

Are website templates bad for SEO?

Not inherently. Problems come from bloated themes that slow pages down and layouts that force thin content. A lightweight, well-maintained template can rank fine.

How long does a custom website take?

At JLB USA, most custom WordPress sites launch in 6 to 10 weeks. Content and feedback speed are usually the biggest variables.

Can I start with a template and go custom later?

Yes. Many businesses do. Plan for a redesign with a redirect map so the pages that already rank keep their traffic.
