Shopify or Wix: which suits your online store

Wix is a website builder that sells. Shopify is a store platform that also builds websites. The difference shows up as your catalog and sales grow.

The short answer

Choose Shopify if selling online is the main job of your website, you expect your catalog or order volume to grow, or you want the widest choice of ecommerce apps, payment options and sales channels. Choose Wix if your website is mainly about your business, with a modest product range or services and bookings on the side, and you want design freedom with a drag-and-drop editor.

Both are hosted, so neither needs servers or plugin updates. Both have plans that accept payments. The real differences are how far each scales on catalog size, how much the app ecosystem can add, and how easily you can grow into wholesale, multiple locations or international selling. This guide compares them on those points, as of 2026.

At a glance

Shopify

Built for commerce first. Plans from Basic to Advanced and Plus. Large app store, its own payment processing, point of sale, and B2B tools on higher plans. Up to 2,048 variants per product.

Wix

Website builder first, with Wix Stores for selling. Core, Business and Business Elite plans accept payments. Flexible visual editor, bookings and events built in. Up to 1,000 variants per product.

Catalog size and product options

For a store with simple products, both are fine. Differences appear with complex catalogs:

  • Variants. Shopify announced in October 2025 that all merchants can create products with up to 2,048 variants, up from 100. Wix’s help center says each Wix Stores product can have up to 6 options with 100 choices each and up to 1,000 variants in total.
  • Bulk management. Shopify’s admin, CSV imports and bulk editor are built for managing thousands of products and inventory across locations. Wix handles a smaller catalog comfortably, but large catalogs take more effort to keep tidy.
  • Inventory locations. Shopify’s pricing page lists 10 inventory locations on standard plans and 200 on Plus, useful for businesses with stores, warehouses or a 3PL.

If you sell apparel in many size and color combinations, made-to-order products, or parts with long spec lists, test your largest product on both before deciding.

Apps and features

  • Shopify has a much larger app ecosystem for ecommerce: subscriptions, reviews, loyalty, product bundles, advanced shipping, wholesale, and integrations with most accounting, ERP and email tools. Shopify Flow, its automation app, is free on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus.
  • Wix lists selling on marketplaces such as Google, Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok from one dashboard, point of sale, dropshipping and abandoned cart emails. It also includes bookings, events and memberships in the same builder, which suits service businesses that sell a few products alongside appointments.
  • Design. Wix’s editor allows more freeform layout. Shopify themes are more structured but tuned for product pages, collections and checkout.

Payments and fees

On Shopify, as of 2026, online card rates with Shopify Payments are 2.9% + 30 cents on Basic, 2.7% + 30 cents on Grow and 2.5% + 30 cents on Advanced. If you use another payment provider, Shopify adds a fee of 2%, 1% or 0.6% depending on plan. Plan prices are $39, $105 and $399 a month on monthly billing, or $29, $79 and $299 billed yearly.

Wix’s plans page says prices and currency vary by location and shows prices for reference, so check your own price at checkout. Its Core, Business and Business Elite plans accept payments, and Business Elite is positioned for advanced ecommerce. Wix Payments and other providers charge processing fees; confirm the current rate for your country before comparing. Whichever you pick, build a one-year cost with plan fees, processing on your expected sales, and paid apps.

Day-to-day running

Think about who will run the store each week. On Wix, the same editor manages pages, blog posts, bookings and products, which suits an office manager who looks after the whole site. On Shopify, the admin is built around orders, fulfillment, inventory and customers, with content pages secondary. Shopify’s mobile app is strong for processing orders and checking stock on the go.

Either way, give each person their own login rather than sharing one, turn on two-step login, and remove access the day someone leaves. Store accounts hold customer data and payout details, so they deserve the same care as your email.

Room to grow

Think about where the business will be in three years, not just today:

  • Higher volume: Shopify’s plan ladder runs up to Plus, with lower card rates, checkout customization, unlimited staff accounts and expansion stores.
  • Wholesale: Shopify includes B2B catalogs on its standard plans and unlimited on Plus. On Wix, wholesale usually means apps or workarounds.
  • International: both offer multiple languages and currency display; Shopify Markets handles selling to several countries from one store.
  • Integrations: connecting a store to accounting, CRM or an ERP is more common and better supported on Shopify.

Ownership and moving later

Neither platform lets you take the site itself elsewhere. Wix’s help center states that a Wix site must run on Wix’s servers and cannot be moved to another host. Shopify themes likewise only run on Shopify. What you can take with you is your domain and your data. Shopify exports products, customers and orders to CSV files, and its migration tools and apps are widely used to move stores in and out.

Many businesses start on Wix and move to Shopify when the store outgrows it. If you do, plan 301 redirects from every old product and page URL so rankings carry over, and expect to rebuild the design.

Decision rules

Pick Shopify if:

  • Online sales are, or will be, a main source of revenue.
  • You have many products or complex variants.
  • You need subscriptions, wholesale, multiple locations or deep integrations.
  • You want to sell in person with the same inventory.

Pick Wix if:

  • Your site is mostly about services, with some products on the side.
  • You want bookings, events and a store in one simple builder.
  • Your catalog is small and unlikely to grow fast.
  • Design flexibility matters more than ecommerce depth.

Questions we hear

Is Wix or Shopify cheaper?

It depends on your plan, location and sales. Wix shows prices that vary by location, and Shopify’s Basic plan is $39 a month or $29 billed yearly as of 2026. Compare a full year including processing fees and paid apps.

Can Wix handle a large online store?

Wix supports up to 1,000 variants per product and a range of selling features. Stores with large catalogs, many locations or heavy integrations usually find Shopify easier to scale.

Can I move my Wix store to Shopify?

Yes. You cannot move the Wix site itself, but you can move products, customers and content to Shopify, rebuild the design and set up 301 redirects from old URLs.

Which is better for SEO, Shopify or Wix?

Both handle the technical basics and can rank. Product and category content, page speed and links matter more than the platform.

Does Shopify charge transaction fees?

Only when you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, as of 2026.
