Magento 2 end of life: what the dates mean for your store

Magento 2 is not going away, but each version loses support on a set date. Here are the 2026 dates and your options.

2.4.6 standard support ended Aug 2026

Upgrade to 2.4.8 or 2.4.9

The short answer

Magento 2 as a platform is not ending, but each Magento 2 version has an end-of-support date. Adobe gives each Adobe Commerce 2.4.x release roughly three years of standard support from its release date. As of October 2026, 2.4.4 and 2.4.5 are past extended support and get only limited security fixes until May 31, 2027, 2.4.6 left standard support on August 11, 2026 and has extended support until August 31, 2027 (then security-only fixes to May 31, 2028), and 2.4.7 is supported until May 31, 2027 with an extra year to May 31, 2028. 2.4.8 runs to May 31, 2028 and 2.4.9 to May 31, 2029. If your store is on 2.4.6 or older, you need a plan now: upgrade to 2.4.8 or 2.4.9, or move to another platform.

Magento 2 support dates as of 2026

These dates come from Adobe’s published lifecycle policy for Adobe Commerce, as of October 2026:

  • 2.4.9: released May 12, 2026. Standard support to May 31, 2029.
  • 2.4.8: released April 8, 2025. Standard support to May 31, 2028.
  • 2.4.7: released April 9, 2024. Standard support to May 31, 2027, then extended support to May 31, 2028.
  • 2.4.6: released March 14, 2023. Standard support ended August 11, 2026. Extended support (quality and security patches) to August 31, 2027, then a security-only period to May 31, 2028.
  • 2.4.5: standard support ended August 12, 2025 and extended support ended August 11, 2026; a security-only period runs to May 31, 2027.
  • 2.4.4: standard support ended April 12, 2025 and extended support ended April 14, 2026; a security-only period runs to May 31, 2027.

The security-only period gives limited, isolated security fixes and no quality fixes. Adobe says this one-time period for 2.4.4, 2.4.5 and 2.4.6 will not be extended beyond the published dates and should be treated as migration time.

What about Magento Open Source?

Magento Open Source, the free edition, shares the same 2.4.x version numbers and patch releases. Adobe’s lifecycle page is written for Adobe Commerce, and it describes the extra year of extended support for 2.4.6 and 2.4.7 as something offered to Adobe Commerce customers. If you run Open Source, treat the standard support date as your real deadline and check with your developer which patches still apply to your version.

What end of support actually means

Your store does not switch off on the end date. What stops is the stream of quality fixes and security patches for that version. From then on:

  • New vulnerabilities stay open. Online stores handle payment pages and customer data, so unpatched software is a direct risk, and attackers target known Magento flaws.
  • The software underneath ages too. Adobe does not fix PHP, MySQL or OpenSearch once those reach end of life. PHP 8.2, the newest PHP that 2.4.6 supports, loses security support on December 31, 2026, according to php.net. Adobe also notes that MySQL 8.0 reached end of support on April 30, 2026.
  • Extensions stop updating. Extension vendors focus on current versions, so payment, shipping and tax modules eventually break or stop getting fixes.
  • Compliance questions get harder. Card payment security standards and cyber-insurance questionnaires typically ask whether software is supported and patched. Running an unsupported version makes those answers uncomfortable. Confirm the specifics with your payment processor or insurer.
  • Cloud hosting changes. For Adobe Commerce on Cloud, Adobe says that starting June 1, 2027 it will stop maintaining Cloud environments on unsupported versions, which includes suspending traffic so the storefront goes offline. Adobe lists June 1, 2027 as the Cloud deadline for 2.4.4 and 2.4.5 and June 1, 2028 for 2.4.6 and 2.4.7.

Your three options

Upgrade within Magento

Move to 2.4.8 or 2.4.9. Best when Magento fits your business, your customizations are valuable and you have developers who know the platform. 2.4.9 needs PHP 8.5; 2.4.8 runs on PHP 8.3 or 8.4.

Move to Adobe’s hosted service

Adobe calls Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service its next-generation hosted platform and says it removes recurring upgrade cycles. It suits larger Adobe Commerce customers who want to stay with Adobe.

Replatform

Move to Shopify, Shopify Plus, BigCommerce or WooCommerce. Best when the store has outgrown its custom code, upgrades keep getting expensive, or nobody on staff wants to manage a Magento stack.

How to decide: upgrade or replatform

Answer these questions honestly:

  1. How much custom code do you have? List custom modules and themes. Each one must be tested, and often rewritten, for a new version. If your last upgrade was painful, the next one will be too.
  2. Which extensions do you rely on, and do their vendors support 2.4.8 or 2.4.9? An abandoned extension can block an upgrade.
  3. Who maintains the store? Magento needs ongoing patching, server management and developer time. Hosted platforms take most of that off your plate in exchange for less control.
  4. What does the business need next? Complex B2B pricing, many store views and heavy ERP integration favor staying on Adobe. Straightforward retail with a marketing-led team often fits a hosted platform better.
  5. What is the three-year cost? Compare upgrade work, hosting, extension licenses and maintenance against a replatform build plus app subscriptions. Upgrading is not automatically cheaper once you count the next upgrade.

If you upgrade: what the project involves

  • A copy of the store on a staging server with production-like data.
  • Server stack updates: PHP, database and OpenSearch versions that the target release supports.
  • Composer updates for core and extensions, then fixing deprecated code in custom modules.
  • Theme fixes, then full testing of checkout, payments, tax, shipping and integrations.
  • A planned cutover with a rollback point and fresh backups.

Plan to keep applying security patches after the upgrade. Adobe releases them regularly, and an upgraded store that is never patched ends up exposed again.

If you replatform: protect what you have

Your product data, customer accounts, order history and search rankings are the assets to protect. Map every Magento URL to its new address with 301 redirects, move data in the order products, customers, orders, and test checkout with real orders before launch. Our Magento to Shopify migration checklist walks through the full process, and our Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison helps if you are choosing a destination.

Questions we hear

When is Magento 2 end of life?

Each version has its own date. As of 2026, Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 extended support ends August 31, 2027 (with security-only fixes to May 31, 2028), 2.4.7 ends May 31, 2028, 2.4.8 ends May 31, 2028 and 2.4.9 ends May 31, 2029. Versions 2.4.4 and 2.4.5 are past extended support and get only limited security fixes until May 31, 2027.

Is Magento 2 being discontinued?

No. Adobe still releases new 2.4.x versions, and 2.4.9 came out in May 2026. Adobe is also offering Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service as a hosted option for Adobe Commerce customers.

What happens if I keep running an unsupported Magento version?

The store keeps working, but it stops receiving security patches, its PHP and database versions age out, and extensions stop updating. That raises security and compliance risk over time.

Should I upgrade Magento or move to Shopify?

Upgrade if Magento’s flexibility and your custom features are worth the ongoing developer and hosting effort. Consider moving if upgrades are costly, your needs are mostly standard retail, or you want less maintenance.
