The short answer

Google Guaranteed no longer exists as a badge. Google replaced Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified with a single Google Verified badge in October 2025, and discontinued the Money Back Guarantee that came with it. According to Google’s help center, customers could only request reimbursement for services booked before December 7, 2025.

So the question today is whether Local Services Ads (LSA), the ads that carry the badge, are worth it. They usually are for home service and professional businesses that answer the phone fast, have solid reviews and can handle the job types Google sends. They usually are not if you miss calls, have few reviews, serve a narrow niche Google does not categorize well, or cannot make money at the price of a typical lead in your market.

What actually changed

  • One badge for everyone. Existing advertisers who had completed verification moved to Google Verified automatically, and their ads kept running.
  • No more money-back promise to customers. The reimbursement program ended for services booked from December 7, 2025.
  • Ranking unchanged. Google says the new badge does not affect Local Services Ads ranking.
  • Same pay-per-lead model. You still pay for leads (calls, messages and bookings), not clicks.

If your website, van wraps or estimates still say “Google Guaranteed,” update them. The program they describe is gone, and referring to it can confuse customers.

When Local Services Ads pay off

  • You sell an urgent or high-value local service. Plumbing, HVAC, roofing, locksmiths, garage doors, pest control, and many legal practice areas fit well. Searchers often call the first credible business they see.
  • Someone answers the phone. Google’s ranking help page says responsiveness matters and missed calls may hurt you.
  • You have reviews. Rating and number of reviews feed into profile quality, which Google says affects ranking and can lower cost per lead.
  • Your job value is well above the lead price. If one job in five leads covers a month of spend, the math is easy.
  • You do not yet rank well in the map results. Local Services Ads often appear near the top of results for local service searches, giving you visibility while SEO catches up.

When they usually do not

  • Calls go to voicemail. You can be charged for a missed call during business hours if the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds, per Google’s lead rules.
  • Your services do not match Google’s job types. Google no longer credits leads for job types or areas you do not serve, so poor category fit means paying for leads you cannot use.
  • You need tight control. LSA has no keywords, ad copy or landing pages to tune. If you want to choose exactly which searches you pay for, search campaigns give you that.
  • You are in health care, tax preparation, or advertise in EMEA. Google says automated lead credits are not available for these, which raises the cost of bad leads.
  • Low-ticket, low-margin services. If a typical job barely covers a lead or two, the numbers rarely work.

A simple test to decide

  1. Write down your average gross profit per job and your close rate on phone leads.
  2. Multiply them. That is the most you can pay per lead and break even.
  3. Find the typical lead price for your category and area. Your account’s billing view shows what each lead cost once you are running, and a short, capped test is the most reliable way to learn it.
  4. If the estimate is comfortably below break-even, run LSA for 60 to 90 days with a budget you can afford to lose while you learn.
  5. Track every lead to won or lost. Rate leads in the dashboard; Google says feedback can earn bonus credits and helps tune lead quality.

For a detailed look at what LSA leads cost and how to budget, compare against your Google Ads costs so you judge both channels by cost per customer.

How to get more from Local Services Ads

  • Answer fast. Turn on message and booking leads if you cannot always pick up, so customers can still reach you after hours.
  • Build reviews steadily. Ask every happy customer. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews has scripts and timing.
  • Use Maximize Leads bidding. Google recommends it and says providers who use it typically get more leads than those who do not at equal quality and budget.
  • Set job types and service areas carefully. Remove anything you do not want, since those leads will not be credited.
  • Complete the profile. Photos, a clear business bio and finished verification checks all count toward profile quality.

Questions to answer before you start

  1. Who answers the phone during business hours, and how fast do missed calls get returned?
  2. Which job types do you actually want, and which would you turn down?
  3. Exactly which ZIP codes or cities can you serve profitably?
  4. How many Google reviews do you have, and what is your rating?
  5. How will you record whether each lead became a paying job?
  6. What is the most you would spend in a month while testing?

If you cannot answer the first and fifth questions yet, fix those before spending money. They decide more of your results than any setting in the account.

Questions we hear

Does Google Guaranteed still exist?

No. Google replaced Google Guaranteed and its other Local Services Ads badges with a single Google Verified badge in October 2025 and discontinued the Money Back Guarantee.

What does the Google Verified badge mean?

It shows that a business passed Google’s Local Services screening and verification process. Google says it does not affect ad ranking.

Do I pay per click with Local Services Ads?

No. You pay per lead: calls, messages or booking requests through your ad. Google filters some invalid leads and automatically credits some low-quality ones.

Are Local Services Ads worth it for a small business?

Often, if you answer calls quickly, have good reviews and your job value is well above the lead price in your area. If you miss calls or have thin margins, they often are not.
