The short answer

Click fraud in Google Ads means clicks made without any real interest in your business: bots, click farms, or a competitor clicking to drain your budget. Google filters invalid clicks automatically and does not charge for the ones it catches; if it finds more after you have been billed, it issues a credit. You can see those credits in the Invalid Activity Credit Report and ask for an investigation through Google’s Click Quality Form.

Most wasted spend in small accounts is not fraud, though. It is real people clicking on searches that never should have triggered the ad. Fix targeting first, then use exclusions and monitoring for what is left.

How common is click fraud really

There is no reliable public figure for small business accounts. Google does not publish an overall invalid click rate in its help center, and the large percentages often quoted online usually come from companies that sell click fraud protection. Treat those numbers with caution, because definitions vary and the sellers have an interest in high estimates.

What is clear from Google’s own materials, as of 2026: its ad traffic quality team uses automatic filters, machine learning and manual review to detect invalid activity. Invalid clicks it identifies are removed from your metrics and your bill. Google lists accidental clicks from poorly placed ads as one type of invalid click, which is one reason many lead-gen advertisers keep a close eye on app and Display placements.

What Google counts as invalid and what it refunds

  • Accidental clicks, for example from poorly placed ads in apps.
  • Automated traffic from bots, crawlers and deceptive software.
  • Manual clicks meant to raise your costs or inflate a publisher’s earnings.

According to Google Ads Help: you are not charged for invalid clicks detected in real time. When Google detects invalid activity after an invoice has been generated, it issues credits for the associated spend where appropriate. Google says credits are issued where appropriate and possible, and in rare cases your reports may show more conversions than clicks because a click was later removed as invalid.

How to check invalid clicks in your account

  1. In the campaigns view, add the Invalid clicks column. It shows clicks Google’s automated protections filtered out and did not charge for.
  2. Open Report Editor and choose the template Invalid Activity Credit Report: Search & PMax. It shows credited amounts, credited clicks and adjusted cost after credits.
  3. Compare with your own data: server logs, form submissions and call logs. Look for bursts of clicks with no time on site, repeated clicks from one location, or clicks from outside your targeted area.

When to file a claim

Google’s Click Quality Form covers invalid clicks, poor-quality form submissions, clicks from outside your location targeting and sudden short-term cost increases. Google limits investigations to activity in the past 60 days. File one when you see a clear pattern, not a hunch. Include:

  • The campaign, dates and times affected.
  • Click IDs (GCLIDs) and IP addresses from your server logs where you have them.
  • What makes the activity look invalid: repeat clicks, zero engagement, impossible locations.
  • Any cost spike compared with your normal daily spend.

Be accurate. Submitting claims built on guesses wastes your time and Google’s. If Google finds invalid activity, the credit appears on a later invoice and in the Invalid Activity Credit Report, so check there before following up.

How to protect your budget

  • Check networks. Segment results by network and turn off Display expansion and search partners in Search campaigns if they do not convert.
  • Location setting. Target people in or regularly in your area, not people merely interested in it.
  • Ad schedule. Run ads when you can answer. Suspicious overnight clicks disappear with the schedule.
  • IP exclusions. As of 2026, Google lets you exclude up to 500 IP addresses per campaign, and also supports account-level exclusions. Useful against a known office address; less useful against bots or mobile users whose IPs change.
  • Placement exclusions. For Display and Performance Max, exclude app categories and sites that send junk.
  • Budget caps. Daily budgets limit how much a burst of bad clicks can cost before you notice.
  • Weekly review. Search terms, location reports and invalid click columns, every week.

Are click fraud protection tools worth it

Third-party tools monitor clicks, flag suspicious visitors and add their IPs to your exclusion list automatically. They can help accounts in very competitive local markets, or ones with heavy Display spend. Before buying one, know the limits:

  • They cannot get you refunds; claims still go through Google.
  • IP exclusion lists have a cap, and bots rotate addresses.
  • Their own reports may count clicks as “fraud” that Google already filtered and did not charge for; Google’s help center makes the same point.
  • They cost money every month. Compare that cost with the credits and savings you can actually see.

For most small businesses, tight targeting, a sensible schedule and weekly review do more than a tool. Our guide to what Google Ads costs explains how to budget around real lead costs.

Is it fraud or poor targeting?

Before blaming fraud, compare the signs:

Likely invalid activity

Many clicks in minutes from one location, zero time on site, clicks from outside your target area despite correct settings, a sudden cost spike with no change in searches.

Likely a targeting problem

Search terms that are real but irrelevant, clicks from people who browse and leave, leads for services you do not offer, spend spread across hours when no one answers.

The first group is worth documenting and reporting. The second is fixed in the account with negative keywords, location and schedule settings and better landing pages. Clicks from real people on searches your settings allowed are not invalid activity, so these costs are yours to prevent.

Keep records that make a claim credible

If you advertise in a competitive market, keep basic evidence as a habit rather than scrambling after a spike. Store the GCLID with each form lead, keep server logs for at least 60 days (the period Google will investigate), note your normal daily spend and click volume, and save screenshots of anything unusual with the date and time. With this in place, a Click Quality Form submission takes minutes and gives Google something concrete to review.

Questions we hear

Does Google refund click fraud?

Google does not charge for invalid clicks it detects in real time, and it issues credits when it finds invalid activity after billing, where appropriate and possible. You can request an investigation through the Click Quality Form.

Can a competitor click my Google Ads?

They can, and Google treats intentional clicks meant to raise your costs as invalid. Repeated clicks from one source are usually filtered. You can also exclude a known IP address.

How do I see invalid clicks in Google Ads?

Add the Invalid clicks column to your campaigns view, and use the Invalid Activity Credit Report template in Report Editor for credits.

How many IP addresses can I exclude in Google Ads?

As of 2026, up to 500 per campaign, plus account-level exclusions.

Is most wasted spend click fraud?

Usually not. In most small accounts, more money is lost to irrelevant searches, loose location settings and ads running at the wrong hours. Fix those before buying a fraud tool.
