Choose Wix if you need a simple site live this month, you will manage it yourself, and you are comfortable staying on Wix for the life of the site. Choose WordPress if the website has to bring in leads, connect to other systems, or grow past a handful of pages, and you want to be able to move it to another host or another developer without starting over. For most businesses with 10 to 100 employees, WordPress is the safer long-term choice. Wix is fine for a new business that needs to look credible quickly.
The real difference is not features. It is control. Wix is a hosted service: Wix runs the software and the servers, and your site lives there. WordPress is open-source software you can install with almost any host, so you own the files and the database.
This is the question that matters most if your business plans to be around in five years.
A simple test before you commit to any platform: ask “If we leave, what exactly do we take with us?” If the honest answer is “your text and photos,” plan for a full rebuild later.
Both platforms can rank. Google does not favor one platform over another. What differs is how much you can control when you need to.
If you already rank on Google, protect that before switching anything. Google’s own site-move guidance says to map every old URL to its new one with redirects. Our guide to redesigning without losing rankings walks through the steps.
Wix publishes monthly plan prices that vary by location and billing term. The advertised entry price is low. But comparing the first month is misleading. Compare total cost over three years instead.
A paid plan to connect your domain and remove Wix branding, plus paid apps for features like booking, advanced forms or memberships. Design and setup are your time or a designer’s fee. No separate hosting or update work.
The software is free. You pay for hosting, a domain, any premium theme or plugins, regular updates and security, and usually a professional build. Upfront cost is higher. Running cost depends on the hosting and support you pick.
A practical rule: if the site is a digital business card, Wix usually costs less over three years. If the site needs custom pages, integrations or ongoing SEO, WordPress usually costs less per lead, because you are not paying to work around the platform’s limits. Our article on what a small business website costs breaks down the line items.
Wix’s drag-and-drop editor is easy for one person to learn. The risk is that easy editing also makes it easy for layouts to drift as different people move things around.
WordPress, when built well, gives staff simple editing for text, images, blog posts and team pages while keeping the design locked in place. The quality of the editing experience depends on how the site is built, so ask to see the editing screen before you sign with any developer.
As a business grows, the website stops being a brochure and starts feeding other systems. Leads need to go into a CRM. Bookings need to reach a calendar. Orders need to reach accounting.
According to W3Techs, as of October 2026 WordPress runs about 40% of all websites and Wix about 4%. That size gap shows up in practice: more developers, more plugins and more answers when something breaks.

If two or more apply, plan a move. Do it with a redirect map so the pages that already bring in traffic keep their rankings.
Wix is a reasonable choice when you are a new or very small business, you have a few services, most work comes from referrals, and nobody will invest in SEO or integrations soon. It gets you online quickly with no maintenance. Just go in knowing that a future move is a rebuild, not a transfer.
We build custom WordPress websites for growing businesses. Most launch in 6 to 10 weeks. You can edit your own site, and if you ever leave, you keep it. When we move a site from Wix or another platform, we set up redirects from old pages so rankings carry over. Our hosting includes constant automated monitoring and malware cleanup, which takes the update and security work off your plate.

Both can rank. WordPress gives more control over technical SEO, site structure and large numbers of pages. Wix is easier for beginners but you work within its options.
Not directly. Wix says its sites must be hosted on Wix’s servers. You move the content and rebuild the site on WordPress, with redirects from old URLs so rankings carry over.
Wix usually costs less upfront. Over three years, the answer depends on paid apps, your time and whether you outgrow the platform. Compare total cost, not the first month.
Wix states that the content you build belongs to you, but the site itself cannot be hosted elsewhere. With WordPress you own the files and database and can move them.
Wix is easier to learn on day one. A well-built WordPress site can be just as easy for staff to edit, while keeping the design locked in place.
