A welcome email series is a short set of automated emails sent to every new subscriber. For most small businesses, three to five emails over 10 to 14 days works well: the first sent immediately to deliver what you promised, then one every two to four days that introduces your business, shows proof that you are worth trusting, answers the main objection and makes a clear first offer. Each email should have one job and one main link.
It is usually the first automation to set up, because new subscribers pay the most attention right after they join. Below is a ready-to-adapt plan, with variations for online stores, service businesses and B2B firms.
Email 1: the discount and best sellers. Email 3: reviews and user photos. Email 4: shipping, returns and sizing. Email 5: the code expires soon. Exit anyone who orders.
Email 1: the guide or checklist. Email 2: who you are and where you work. Email 3: a client story. Email 4: what the first appointment or project looks like and how pricing works. Email 5: book a call or consultation.
Email 1: the report or template. Emails 2 to 4: one practical insight each, tied to a problem the buyer has. Email 5: an invitation to a short call. Slower pacing, every 4 to 7 days, suits longer buying cycles.

All the main platforms support welcome series, but the details differ:
If you use double opt-in, the welcome series should start after confirmation, not at the first form submit.
Review it every quarter. Update offers, swap in fresh reviews and test one change at a time, such as the subject line of email 1 or the offer in email 5.

Three to five for most small businesses, sent over 10 to 14 days. B2B series can be longer and slower if each email adds something useful.
Immediately after signup, or right after confirmation if you use double opt-in.
For stores, a first-order offer often works well. Service and B2B firms usually do better with a useful guide and an invitation to book.
Mailchimp’s help center says Essentials flows are limited to 4 steps. Standard and higher allow up to 200 steps, which fits a five-email series with waits.
Move subscribers to your regular newsletter and, if they bought, into a post-purchase or onboarding flow.
