The short answer

TikTok is worth it for a small business when your customers are on it and you can post short, simple videos several times a week. It suits businesses with something visual to show: products, before-and-after results, behind-the-scenes work, or quick expert answers. It is a weaker fit for businesses whose buyers are mostly older decision makers or who sell a complex service with a long sales cycle.

You can start for free with a business account and organic posts. If you want to pay for reach, TikTok Ads Manager requires campaign daily budgets above $50 and ad group daily budgets above $20, according to TikTok’s own budget help page, as of 2026. A 60-day test with a fixed budget and clear tracking will tell you more than any opinion.

Who is actually on TikTok

Pew Research Center’s 2025 survey of US adults found TikTok used by 63% of 18 to 29 year olds, 44% of 30 to 49 year olds, 30% of 50 to 64 year olds and 12% of those 65 and older. For comparison, the same survey found 71% of US adults use Facebook and 50% use Instagram.

That gives a quick screen. If your typical buyer is under 50 and buys for themselves, TikTok deserves a test. If your buyer is a 60-year-old facilities director or a retiree, your money and time probably go further on Facebook, Google search or email. Many businesses sit in between: a home services company selling to homeowners in their thirties and forties, for example, can do well with short project videos.

What works for small businesses on TikTok

  • Show the work. A contractor’s job from start to finish, a groomer’s before and after, a bakery decorating an order. Process videos hold attention because people want to see the result.
  • Answer one question per video. “How much does it cost to replace a water heater?” or “What should I ask before hiring a wedding photographer?” Short, direct expert answers build trust and get searched in the app.
  • Put a person on camera. The owner or a staff member speaking plainly usually beats a polished brand video. Viewers follow people.
  • Hook in the first two seconds. Start with the result, the problem or the question, not a logo or a greeting.
  • Post consistently. Three to five videos a week for two months gives you enough data to see what your audience responds to. Reuse the same clips on Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.
  • Use captions and on-screen text. Many people watch with the sound off.

What usually does not work

  • Reposting TV-style ads or stock footage with music over it.
  • Posting twice and judging the platform on those results.
  • Chasing every trend sound, even when it has nothing to do with your business.
  • Expecting direct phone calls from organic views without a clear next step in your profile.
  • Measuring success by follower count rather than website visits, messages or sales.

Your options for paying for reach

Promote

A simple in-app option to put money behind a video you already posted, similar to boosting on Facebook. Fine for more views or profile visits on a video that is already doing well.

Spark Ads

Run an organic post, yours or a creator’s with their permission, as an ad in Ads Manager. Views and engagement count on the original post, so it keeps its social proof.

Ads Manager campaigns

Full campaigns with objectives such as traffic, leads or website conversions, audience controls and testing. This is where you measure cost per lead or sale.

For campaigns that optimize for leads or sales, install the TikTok Pixel on your website and, ideally, its Events API, which TikTok recommends running alongside the Pixel, the same idea as Meta’s Pixel and Conversions API. Without tracking, TikTok can only optimize for views and clicks.

TikTok Shop: worth a look for product sellers

If you sell physical products, TikTok Shop lets people buy without leaving the app, from your videos, live streams, or creators who promote your products for a commission. It works best for products that demonstrate well in under a minute and sell at impulse-friendly prices. It adds another sales channel to manage: inventory sync, fulfillment speed, returns and seller fees. Check TikTok’s current seller terms and fees for your category before you list, because they change. If you already run a Shopify store, TikTok’s sales channel app can sync products so you are not managing two catalogs by hand.

A 60-day test plan

  1. Week 1: switch to a business account, write a profile that says what you do and where, and add a link to a page built for TikTok visitors. Install the TikTok Pixel.
  2. Weeks 1 to 4: post three to five videos a week across three or four content types, such as process, question answers, customer stories and offers. Note which types get the most watch time and profile visits.
  3. Weeks 3 to 8: take the two best performing organic videos and run them as Spark Ads with a fixed budget you are comfortable losing, aimed at traffic or leads in your service area.
  4. Throughout: tag every link with UTM parameters so visits show up correctly in Google Analytics, and ask new customers how they found you.
  5. Day 60: compare cost per lead or sale against your other channels. Keep going, adjust, or stop.

Practical risks to weigh

  • Time. The real cost of TikTok is the hours spent filming and editing. Batch film a week of videos in one session.
  • Account security. Use a business email, a strong unique password and two-step login, and do not tie the account to one employee’s personal phone.
  • Company policy. Some organizations, particularly those with government contracts, restrict TikTok on work devices. Check before installing it on company phones.
  • Platform changes. Rules, features and ownership arrangements for TikTok in the US have shifted in recent years. Keep your own website and email list as the base, and treat any social platform as a channel you rent.

Questions we hear

Is TikTok free for businesses?

Yes. A business account and organic posting are free. You pay only if you run ads, promote posts or sell through TikTok Shop, which charges seller fees.

What is the minimum budget for TikTok ads?

As of 2026, TikTok’s budget help page says campaign daily budgets must exceed $50 and ad group daily budgets must exceed $20. Promote, the in-app option, has its own budget settings shown when you set it up.

How often should a small business post on TikTok?

Three to five times a week is a practical target while you learn what works. Consistency matters more than polish.

Is TikTok good for B2B companies?

Sometimes, for companies selling to younger owners or professionals. For most B2B sales to older decision makers, LinkedIn, Google search and email usually do more.

Do I need to dance or follow trends?

No. Clear videos showing your work or answering customer questions often outperform trend content for small businesses.
