The short answer

LinkedIn lead generation for B2B uses four levers together: turn the profiles of the people who sell into landing pages, post useful content that keeps you visible to buyers, run targeted ads with Lead Gen Forms to capture contact details without sending people off LinkedIn, and do personal outreach to well-chosen prospects. Connect every lead to your CRM and follow up within hours. Avoid automation tools; LinkedIn’s User Agreement bans them and accounts get restricted.

Each lever suits a different stage. Content and profiles build trust over months. Ads produce leads in weeks but cost money. Outreach is fast and cheap but only works when it is personal. Most B2B companies with a clear buyer should use at least three of the four.

Start with a clear target

LinkedIn’s strength is targeting by job, company and industry. Before doing anything, write down:

  • The job titles that buy or influence the decision, for example operations managers and CFOs at firms with 20 to 200 employees.
  • Industries and regions you serve well.
  • The problem they search for help with, in their words.
  • The first step you want them to take: download a guide, request an assessment, book a call.

Everything below gets easier and cheaper with that clarity.

1. Profiles that convert

When someone sees your post or connection request, they click your personal profile, not the company page. Treat it like a landing page:

  • Headline: who you help and how, not just a job title. “Helping manufacturers cut downtime with predictive maintenance.”
  • About section: the problem you solve, a short example result, and how to reach you.
  • Featured section: pin a guide, case study or booking link.
  • Professional photo and banner that match the company brand.
  • Recommendations from clients that describe outcomes.

Do this for everyone who sells or meets prospects, not just the founder.

2. Content that keeps you top of mind

Most buyers are not ready today. Regular posts keep you visible until they are. Buffer’s 2025 analysis of more than 2 million LinkedIn posts from over 94,000 accounts found that posting two to five times a week brought more impressions and engagement per post than posting once a week, and that accounts posting even more often saw larger gains still, if they could keep quality up.

  • Answer questions prospects ask on sales calls.
  • Share short case stories: problem, approach, result.
  • Comment thoughtfully on posts by prospects and industry voices; comments are visible to their networks.
  • End posts with a soft next step, such as offering a checklist to anyone who asks in the comments or a message.

Personal profiles usually reach more people than company pages, so owners and sales staff should post themselves.

3. Ads with Lead Gen Forms

LinkedIn ads let you reach exact job titles, seniority levels, company sizes and industries. Lead Gen Forms are the key tool for B2B lead generation: when someone clicks, a form opens inside LinkedIn already filled in with their profile data (name, contact information, company, job title, location), and they submit with one click. LinkedIn says 90% of pilot customers beat their cost-per-lead goals with these forms, and leads can sync to a CRM or marketing tool.

  • Offer something worth a work email: a checklist, benchmark report, calculator or free assessment. “Contact us” rarely works cold.
  • Keep forms short. Every extra question lowers completion. Add one qualifying question at most.
  • Retarget people who engaged with your posts or visited your site.
  • Send leads to the CRM instantly and follow up the same day while they remember you.
  • Exclude current customers and competitors by uploading lists.

Cost is set by auction. It depends on how narrow the audience is, how many advertisers want the same job titles and how good your offer and creative are. Start with a modest test budget on one audience and one offer, then expand what works.

4. Personal outreach

Direct outreach still works when it is relevant and human:

  1. Pick a small list of prospects who fit your target exactly.
  2. Engage first: follow them, react to or comment on their posts.
  3. Send a connection request with a short, specific note. No pitch.
  4. After they accept, share something useful, such as an article or answer, with no ask.
  5. Only then suggest a short call if there is a real fit. Stop after one or two follow-ups.

Sales Navigator, LinkedIn’s paid sales tool, helps here with more than 50 search filters, saved lead lists, alerts, InMail credits and, on higher tiers, CRM sync with tools such as HubSpot, Salesforce and Dynamics 365.

Avoid automation tools that send connection requests or messages for you. LinkedIn’s User Agreement prohibits bots and unauthorized automated methods to add contacts or send messages, and prohibits scraping tools, including browser plug-ins. Restricted accounts lose their network. If you move a prospect to email, US commercial email rules (CAN-SPAM) still apply.

A 90-day plan

If you are starting from scratch, this sequence avoids spending on ads before the basics are in place:

  • Weeks 1 to 2: define the target buyer, rewrite sales profiles, complete the company page and create one strong offer, such as a checklist or assessment.
  • Weeks 3 to 6: post two to three times a week from the owner and sales staff, and start daily outreach to a short, researched list.
  • Weeks 7 to 10: launch a small Lead Gen Form campaign to one audience with your offer, and retarget people who engaged with your posts.
  • Weeks 11 to 13: review leads by source, keep what produced meetings, and scale budget only on audiences that convert.

By the end, you know which lever works for your market and can put more time or money behind it.

When to send people to your website instead

Lead Gen Forms win on convenience, but some leads are better qualified on your own site. A landing page lets you explain a complex service, show proof and use your own booking tool. A common pattern is to use Lead Gen Forms for content offers and a dedicated landing page for “book a call” offers. Our guide to landing pages versus homepages for ads covers what that page needs.

Measure what matters

  • Leads by source: posts, ads, outreach, profile visits.
  • Cost per lead and, more important, cost per sales-qualified lead from ads.
  • Meetings booked and deals closed from LinkedIn-sourced leads, tracked in your CRM.
  • Response time to new leads.

Review monthly. Cut audiences and offers that produce form fills but no meetings. JLB manages paid advertising, including Google Ads adjusted weekly, and connects lead sources to your CRM through systems integration, so you can see which channel actually closes deals.

Questions we hear

How do you generate leads on LinkedIn?

Optimize the profiles of the people who sell, post useful content regularly, run targeted ads with Lead Gen Forms, and send personal, relevant connection requests and follow-ups. Track each lead to a source and follow up fast.

What are LinkedIn Lead Gen Forms?

Ad forms that open inside LinkedIn, pre-filled with profile data such as name, job title and company, so prospects can submit with one click. Leads can be downloaded or synced to a CRM or marketing tool.

How much does LinkedIn lead generation cost?

Organic posting and outreach cost mainly time. Ads are billed by auction, so cost per lead depends on audience size, competition for job titles, offer and form quality. Sales Navigator is a separate paid subscription.

Are LinkedIn automation tools allowed?

No. LinkedIn’s User Agreement prohibits bots and unauthorized automated methods to add contacts or send messages, and bans software or browser extensions that scrape the site. Accounts can be restricted.

Is Sales Navigator worth it for a small B2B company?

It helps if someone will use it daily. It adds 50+ search filters, saved lead lists, alerts and InMail credits, and higher tiers sync with CRMs. If outreach is occasional, regular LinkedIn search may be enough.
