Most small businesses pay for SEO as a monthly retainer, and the most common range is about $500 to $1,000 a month. In SE Ranking’s 2025 pricing survey of 260 agencies, most of them small firms serving small and local businesses, 64% charged under $1,000 a month, 20% charged $1,000 to $2,000, and 13% charged $2,000 to $5,000. Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers found a higher average retainer of $2,917 a month and an average hourly rate of $111. Prices vary widely by market, competition and scope, so treat these as reference points, not quotes.
Where you land depends on how competitive your searches are, how many services and locations you need to rank for, the state of your website, and how much new content the work includes. The rest of this guide explains the pricing models, what each budget level usually buys, the red flags behind very cheap SEO, and how to set a budget you can judge in leads, not rankings.
A retainer makes sense when you want steady progress over months. A project makes sense when you have a clear, finite job, such as fixing a site after a redesign or setting up local listings for a new location.
These are typical patterns, not fixed packages. Ask any provider to list exactly what happens each month.
Usually local basics: Google Business Profile upkeep, consistent business listings, fixes to titles and page structure, and a monthly report. Fine for a single-location business in a less competitive market.
Adds a steady flow of new or improved pages each month, technical fixes, internal linking, review generation and call and form tracking. This is where most growing service businesses see real movement.
Multiple locations or service areas, competitive industries such as legal or home services in large metros, a regular content program and earning links from other reputable sites.
An offer of $99 a month for “first page rankings” is rarely a bargain. At that price, there is little time for real work, so the provider either does almost nothing or uses shortcuts that can hurt your site. Google’s own guidance on hiring an SEO lists warning signs worth knowing:
Cheap SEO that triggers a quality problem can take months of paid work to undo. That is the real cost of a low price.
Some SEO work needs no specialist, and doing it in-house frees the budget for the technical and content work that does. A few hours a month from you or an office manager goes a long way:
Leave site structure, speed, redirects and tracking to someone who does them every week. Mistakes there are expensive to undo.

SEO is slower than paid ads. Most small businesses need several months before the work shows up in leads, and competitive markets take longer. That makes it important to set a budget you can keep, and to judge it on the right numbers.
One more reason to focus on leads: clicks are shifting. A Pew Research Center study found that people who saw a Google AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when there was no summary. Pages that answer real customer questions clearly, and that make it easy to call or book, are what keep producing leads as search changes.
These come straight from what Google suggests asking any SEO provider, plus a few practical ones of our own:

Survey data from SE Ranking puts the most common agency retainer at $500 to $1,000 a month, with 64% of agencies charging under $1,000. Competitive markets and multi-location businesses usually need more. Prices vary, so compare what each provider will actually do each month.
Most small businesses need several months before SEO shows up in leads, and competitive markets take longer. Plan a budget you can hold for at least six months and track calls and forms from the start.
Rarely. At that price there is little time for real work, and shortcuts such as link schemes can hurt your site. Google warns against anyone who promises a first-place ranking.
A monthly retainer suits ongoing growth: content, technical fixes and local listings. A project suits a finite job, such as an audit or a site migration. Many businesses start with an audit, then move to monthly work.
