Standard Shopping or Performance Max for your store

Performance Max reaches more places with less control. Standard Shopping gives you control with less reach. Here is how to choose, or combine them.

PMax: more reach, less control

The short answer

Both campaign types use your Google Merchant Center product feed. Standard Shopping shows product ads on the Shopping tab, next to Google search results, in Google Images and optionally on search partners. You can choose manual CPC bidding, set priorities and see clear product-level data. Performance Max uses the same feed plus your images, text and video to run across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover and Maps, with automated bidding only and less visibility into where money goes.

Choose Performance Max when you have reliable conversion tracking, enough sales volume for the system to learn, and creative assets to give it. Choose Standard Shopping when you need tight control over bids and products, your conversion data is thin, or you want clean reporting. Many stores run both, with clearly separated products or goals.

Side by side

Where ads appear

Shopping: Shopping tab, search results, Google Images, search partners. Performance Max: most Google channels, including YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover and Maps, as Google’s help center lists them.

Bidding

Shopping: Manual CPC, Maximize clicks, Target ROAS or Maximize conversion value. Performance Max: automated only, Maximize conversion value (optional ROAS target) or Maximize conversions (optional CPA target).

Creative

Shopping: built from your feed only. Performance Max: feed plus your headlines, images and videos in asset groups.

Billing

Shopping: cost per click. Performance Max: you set a budget and a goal, and Google decides how much to spend on each channel.

Performance Max also adds features Standard Shopping lacks, such as audience signals, Final URL expansion and the wider set of channels. Standard Shopping has campaign priority settings and manual CPC bids.

Control: what you can and cannot steer

  • Search terms. Standard Shopping supports negative keywords directly. Performance Max supports negative keywords and brand exclusions, but Google’s own guidance calls negatives “a highly restrictive control” to use only for brand safety or clearly irrelevant terms.
  • Products. Both let you choose products. Standard Shopping uses product groups with individual bids. Performance Max uses listing groups inside asset groups, with no manual bids.
  • Channels. Standard Shopping stays on Shopping inventory. Performance Max decides how to split budget across channels; the channel performance report shows where it went, but you do not set the split.
  • Brand traffic. Performance Max can spend on searches for your own brand. Google recommends brand exclusions if you do not want to pay for those clicks there.

Reporting: how much you can see

Standard Shopping reports clicks, cost and conversions by product, search term and device in a familiar way. Performance Max reporting has improved: Google now offers a channel performance report that splits results by channel and by “ads using product data,” plus asset group and asset-level reporting. It still gives you less detail than a Shopping campaign about which searches triggered which product ads.

A practical test: if you cannot explain to your bookkeeper where last month’s ad spend went, the campaign structure is too opaque for your stage.

When to run both

Running both is common. The key is avoiding two campaigns fighting over the same product without a plan. Approaches that work:

  • Split by product. Put best sellers and high-margin items in Performance Max, and keep a Standard Shopping campaign for products that need careful bids, such as low-margin or price-sensitive items.
  • Split by goal. Use Performance Max for broader prospecting and Standard Shopping for tightly managed core terms.
  • Use Shopping as a control. Keep a Standard Shopping campaign on a small set of products to compare performance and keep visibility into search terms.

When the same product is eligible in both, check Google’s current guidance on how it chooses between them. Older guidance gave Performance Max automatic priority; according to industry reports of Google’s late-2024 change, the ad with the higher Ad Rank now wins. Within Standard Shopping, the campaign priority setting only decides which Shopping campaign’s budget is used when products overlap.

Before you launch either

  1. Fix the feed. Clear titles, accurate prices, correct GTINs, good images and in-stock status. Feed problems limit both campaign types, and Google’s channel diagnostics flag issues such as missing GTINs and out-of-stock products.
  2. Track purchases with revenue. Value-based bidding needs accurate order values. Test the purchase tag with a real order.
  3. Set a target you can afford. Know your break-even return on ad spend from product margins before you set a ROAS target.
  4. Give Performance Max assets. If you only supply the feed, Google generates the rest, and you have less say in how your brand appears.
  5. Allow time to learn. Judge automated campaigns over weeks, not days, and avoid frequent large changes.

Mistakes that waste e-commerce ad budget

  • Launching Performance Max with broken purchase tracking. It will optimize toward whatever it is told is a sale.
  • Putting every product in one asset group. Group products by margin, category or price so budget does not drift to cheap items that sell easily but earn little.
  • Letting Performance Max take credit for brand searches. Without brand exclusions, results can look better than the new business they really bring.
  • Setting a ROAS target with no margin math behind it. A 400% return can lose money on a low-margin product.
  • Ignoring Merchant Center warnings. Disapproved or limited products quietly drop out of both campaign types.

A quick decision guide

  • New store, few sales a month, patchy tracking: start with Standard Shopping.
  • Steady sales, solid purchase tracking, creative available: test Performance Max alongside or instead.
  • Large catalog with mixed margins: run both, split by product or margin with custom labels.
  • Brand searches already convert well organically: add brand exclusions in Performance Max.

Questions we hear

Is Performance Max better than Standard Shopping?

Not automatically. Performance Max reaches more channels and can find new customers, but needs reliable conversion data. Standard Shopping offers more control and clearer reporting, which often suits newer or smaller stores.

Can I run Performance Max and Shopping campaigns at the same time?

Yes. Many stores do. Split them by product, margin or goal so they are not competing for the same items without a plan.

Does Performance Max show search terms?

It offers less search-term detail than Standard Shopping. Google provides channel, asset group and asset-level reporting, and supports negative keywords and brand exclusions as controls.

Do both campaign types need Merchant Center?

Yes. Both use your Google Merchant Center product feed, so feed quality affects results in either campaign type.
