The short answer

Google Ads works well for contractors because homeowners search the moment they need help: “AC not cooling”, “roof leak repair”, “kitchen remodel contractor near me”. To make it pay, bid only on searches that signal a job, limit ads to your real service area and hours, send each service to its own landing page, and track every call through to a booked job.

Most home service businesses should run two things side by side: Local Services Ads, which appear at the top of results and charge per lead, and regular search campaigns, which charge per click and give you more control over services, keywords and pages. Here is how to set up both.

Keywords that bring jobs

Contractor keywords fall into clear groups. Build campaigns or ad groups around them:

Emergency and repair

“Emergency plumber”, “furnace repair”, “water heater leaking”. Highest intent, highest value. Run these when you can respond fast.

Replacement and install

“New AC unit cost”, “roof replacement”, “tankless water heater installation”. Bigger tickets, longer decisions.

Project and remodel

“Bathroom remodel contractor”, “deck builder”, “basement finishing”. Need strong photos and reviews on the landing page.

Service plus location

Service terms with your city, county or “near me”. Google already uses location, but these show strong local intent.

Just as important is what you exclude. Add negative keywords for searches that will never become jobs: jobs, hiring, salary, training, school, license, DIY, how to, parts, Home Depot, Lowe’s, free, plus services you do not offer. Check the search terms report every week; in a new contractor account, early search terms often include job seekers and do-it-yourselfers.

Local Services Ads: when and how to use them

Local Services Ads (LSAs) are Google’s pay-per-lead listings for verified local service providers. They appear at the top of the page in the areas you choose. You pay when a customer contacts you through the ad, not per click. In most home service categories, businesses that pass Google’s screening and verification earn the Google Verified badge, which shows the checks the business completed.

  • Eligibility: available only for certain service categories, including many home services. Some categories are limited to certain states.
  • Setup: requires a license or business registration where applicable, reviews, a budget, and the verification checks for your category.
  • Ranking: reviews, responsiveness and proximity matter. Answer LSA calls and messages quickly.
  • Lead management: respond to every call and message, since Google says regularly missing them can affect your ad ranking, and track which leads became jobs.

LSAs suit businesses with strong reviews and someone to answer the phone. They give less control over which jobs come in, so pair them with search campaigns for the services you most want. More reviews help both; see how to get more Google reviews.

Service-area targeting

  • Target the area you actually serve by radius, cities or counties. Exclude places you will not drive to.
  • Use the presence setting (people in or regularly in your area) when you only serve locals. Google’s default also includes people interested in the area, which can bring calls from far away.
  • Split campaigns by area if job value or competition differs between your core towns and outlying ones, so you can bid differently.
  • Schedule ads for the hours someone answers. Run emergency campaigns after hours only if you truly take after-hours calls.

Call tracking: the part most contractors skip

Most contractor leads come by phone, so if calls are not tracked, Google cannot tell which keywords produce jobs. Set up:

  1. Call assets on search ads, with call reporting on, so calls from the ad itself are counted.
  2. Website call tracking, so calls from people who clicked an ad and then called from your site are counted too.
  3. A minimum call length for a conversion, so hang-ups and wrong numbers do not count.
  4. Form tracking for quote requests.
  5. Offline conversion import of booked or sold jobs from your CRM or field service software, so bidding optimizes for jobs rather than calls.

Then listen to a sample of calls. They show whether ads are bringing the right jobs and how well calls are handled. A missed call from a paid click is money gone.

Landing pages that convert homeowners

  • One page per main service, matching the ad: “Water heater repair in ”.
  • Phone number at the top, tappable on mobile.
  • Service area, licensing and insurance stated clearly.
  • Real photos of your trucks, team and work.
  • Reviews from local customers.
  • A short form: name, phone, service, zip code.

Our web design team builds these pages, and this guide explains why a home page underperforms.

Budget and seasonality

Demand for many trades is seasonal: cooling in summer, heating in winter, roofing after storms, remodeling in spring. Raise budgets ahead of busy periods and cut back when the schedule is full. Many contractors pause or trim non-emergency campaigns when they are booked weeks out and restart before the slow season. Compare cost per booked job, not cost per click, when deciding where to spend.

Pairing ads with local SEO

Paid ads deliver calls immediately; local SEO builds calls you do not pay for each time. A Google Business Profile with steady reviews supports both LSAs and organic map results. Read our local SEO guide for contractors for the organic side.

Questions we hear

Do Google Ads work for contractors?

Yes, when campaigns target job-ready searches in your service area, exclude job seekers and DIY searches, send clicks to service pages and track calls through to booked jobs.

What is the difference between Local Services Ads and Google Ads?

Local Services Ads are pay-per-lead listings for verified providers that appear at the top of results. Regular search ads are pay-per-click and give more control over keywords, services and landing pages.

What negative keywords should contractors use?

Common ones include jobs, hiring, salary, training, school, license, DIY, how to, parts, free and the names of big-box stores, plus services you do not offer.

How do I track calls from Google Ads?

Add call assets with call reporting, track calls from your website, set a minimum call length and import booked jobs from your CRM.

Should I run ads after hours?

Only if someone answers. Emergency campaigns after hours can be valuable, but unanswered calls waste the click.
