For a business owner, GA4 (Google Analytics 4) comes down to one question: which sources bring visitors who become leads or customers? You only need a few things to answer it. Install the Google tag on every page, mark the actions that matter (form submissions, calls, bookings, purchases) as key events, and then check five reports: Traffic acquisition, Pages and screens, Key events, Realtime and your linked Search Console data. Everything else in GA4 is optional until those are working.
“Key events” is GA4’s name for important actions. Google’s help center explains that a key event is any event you mark as important to your business, while a conversion is a key event you also share with Google Ads for campaign measurement. If you see older guides talking about GA4 conversions, they mean key events.
Older Google Analytics counted sessions and pageviews. GA4 counts events: every page view, scroll, click and form submission is an event. Google’s documentation lists several that are collected automatically, such as session_start and first_visit, and others collected through enhanced measurement when it is turned on:
Enhanced measurement is a good start, but its form tracking can be unreliable on some websites, for example counting a submission even when the form fails. For leads you will make decisions on, track the confirmation directly, such as a thank-you page view or a dedicated event fired by the form tool.
Decide what counts as a lead for your business. For most service businesses, that is three or four actions:
Once each action is being recorded as an event, mark it as a key event. According to Google, you go to Admin, then Events under Data display, find the event and click the star next to it. Standard properties can have up to 30 key events. Marking an event does not change historic data; counting starts from the moment you mark it, which is another reason to set this up early.
Keep the list short. If page views and scrolls are marked as key events, your “leads” number becomes meaningless.

Reports, Engagement, Pages and screens. Your most visited pages and how much engagement they get. Pair it with key events to see which pages produce leads.

A key event is any event you mark as important to your business. A conversion is a key event you also share with Google Ads to measure and optimize campaigns.
Go to Admin, then Events under Data display, find the event and click the star next to it. Counting starts from that moment and does not change past data.
Standard properties can have up to 30 key events, according to Google. Most small businesses need three or four.
Different tools count differently, and ad blockers, consent settings and duplicate tags all affect the totals. Look at trends over time rather than exact matches.
