The short answer

A strong abandoned cart email flow has two or three messages. Send the first a few hours after the shopper leaves, with the items, images and a single button back to the cart. Send the second the next day to answer doubts (shipping, returns, sizing, reviews). If you use a third, send it a day or two later and, only if your margins allow, add a modest incentive, ideally for first-time customers. Klaviyo’s own guidance recommends a first email 2 to 4 hours after checkout starts, a second 20 to 48 hours later, and two to three messages in total. Below are example emails you can adapt, plus the settings that stop the flow from annoying customers who already bought.

Cart vs checkout abandonment

There are two triggers, and they deserve different messages:

  • Abandoned checkout: the shopper entered an email in checkout but did not pay. Shopify counts a checkout as abandoned when it stays incomplete for more than ten minutes after the email is entered. Intent is high, so be prompt and direct.
  • Abandoned cart (added to cart): a known subscriber added items but never reached checkout. Intent is lower, so a softer reminder works better.

If you run both in a tool such as Klaviyo, add a filter so anyone who starts checkout leaves the cart flow, and turn off your store platform’s built-in abandoned checkout email so customers do not get duplicates.

Example email 1: the reminder (2 to 4 hours)

Keep it short and helpful. No discount.

  • Subject: “You left something in your cart”
  • Preview text: “Your items are saved. Pick up where you left off.”
  • Body: “Hi Sam, looks like you were checking out the Trail Runner 2 in size 10. We have saved your cart so you can finish whenever you are ready.” Then a product image, name, variant and price, and one button: “Return to my cart”.
  • Footer line: “Questions about sizing or delivery? Reply to this email and a real person will answer.”

Why it works: it reminds, shows exactly what they chose, and opens a door for questions. The reply-to line catches shoppers who left because of a doubt.

Example email 2: answer the objection (next day)

Use this email to remove the reasons people hesitate. Baymard Institute’s research on why shoppers abandon checkout lists extra costs, slow delivery, trust and returns policies among the top reasons, so address those directly.

  • Subject: “Still thinking it over?”
  • Body: a short line, then three quick answers: “Free shipping over $75. Arrives in 2 to 4 business days. Free returns for 30 days.” Add one or two genuine customer reviews of the product, and the same “Return to my cart” button.
  • Optional: a size guide link for apparel, or a “compare models” link for technical products.

Only state shipping and returns terms you actually offer, and keep them consistent with your site.

Example email 3: the final nudge (1 to 3 days later)

  • Subject: “Your cart is about to expire” (only if it really does) or “Last call on your Trail Runner 2”
  • Body: a brief reminder, the product, and either social proof (“over 400 five-star reviews”) or, if you choose, an incentive.
  • Incentive options: free shipping, a small percentage off, or a gift with purchase. Restrict it to first-time buyers or orders above a threshold.

Klaviyo cautions against putting a coupon in the first email, because it can train customers to abandon carts to get a discount. Holding the incentive for the last email, or offering it only to new customers, protects your margin.

Settings that make or break the flow

  1. Exit when they buy. Add a filter such as “placed order zero times since starting this flow”. Klaviyo checks filters before each message, so buyers drop out.
  2. Limit repeats. Add “has not been in this flow in the last 7 days” (or similar) so frequent browsers do not get the same sequence every visit.
  3. Use dynamic product blocks that pull the exact items, variant and price from the cart.
  4. Link to a restored cart, not the homepage. Test that the link rebuilds the cart on mobile.
  5. Mind sync delays. If your store syncs with the email tool hourly, Klaviyo suggests a first delay of at least 1 hour 15 minutes.
  6. Respect consent. Decide whether the flow goes to everyone who started checkout or only to people who agreed to marketing. Shopify lets you choose who receives its abandoned checkout emails in the “Send to” setting.

Compliance basics

Abandoned cart emails promote a purchase, so in the US they are generally treated as commercial email under the CAN-SPAM Act, not transactional messages. The FTC’s guidance for commercial email includes honest sender details and subject lines, a valid postal address, a working unsubscribe link, and honoring opt-outs within 10 business days. As of 2026, the FTC’s compliance guide says each violating email can bring penalties of up to $53,088. This is general information, not legal advice; check with counsel if you sell internationally, where consent rules are stricter.

Design tips

  • Write in a plain, friendly tone that matches your brand. Short beats clever.
  • One main button per email. Put it near the top for mobile readers.
  • Use real product photos and the exact variant chosen.
  • Send from a recognizable name, such as “Sam at Acme”, and allow replies.
  • Keep images light so the email loads on mobile data.

How to measure it

Track recovered revenue, the placed-order rate per email, and unsubscribe rate. Compare email 3 with and without an incentive over a few weeks before making discounts permanent. If the flow recovers little, look upstream: the fixes in our conversion rate optimization tips often do more than any email can.

Questions we hear

How many abandoned cart emails should I send?

Two or three. Klaviyo says research across thousands of its e-commerce customers found that two to three abandoned cart messages lead to optimal performance.

When should the first abandoned cart email go out?

A few hours after the shopper leaves. Klaviyo recommends 2 to 4 hours after checkout starts, with the second email 20 to 48 hours later.

Should abandoned cart emails include a discount?

Not in the first email. Discounts early on can train shoppers to abandon carts on purpose. If you use one, put it in the last email and consider limiting it to first-time buyers.

Are abandoned cart emails legal without consent?

In the US they are generally treated as commercial email under CAN-SPAM, which requires an unsubscribe link and a postal address. Rules differ in other countries. This is general information; confirm with counsel.
