The short answer

Choose Mailchimp if you want a free plan to start, stronger automation on its Standard plan, and a wide range of integrations. Choose Constant Contact if you want a straightforward tool for newsletters, events and local promotion with simple plans. For most small businesses sending one or two emails a month, either will do the job, and the deciding factors are price at your list size and who on your team will run it.

As of 2026, Mailchimp’s free plan covers up to 250 contacts and 500 sends a month, and its Standard plan starts at $20 a month, according to Mailchimp’s pricing page. Constant Contact’s pricing page lists Lite from $12, Standard from $35 and Premium from $80 a month, with the price rising with your contact count. Use each vendor’s calculator with your real list size before you commit.

Side by side

Mailchimp

Free plan for up to 250 contacts. Paid plans: Essentials, Standard, Premium. Monthly sends of 10, 12 and 15 times your contact limit. 3, 5 and unlimited users. Automation flows up to 4 steps on Essentials, up to 200 on Standard and above. Phone support on Premium.

Constant Contact

Plans: Lite, Standard, Premium, priced by contacts. Monthly sends of 10, 12 and 24 times your contacts. 1, 3 and unlimited users. Lite includes one automation template; Standard adds three automation templates, 10 custom segments, email scheduling and subject-line A/B testing; Premium adds unlimited custom automations and segments and 500 SMS messages a month. Live phone and chat support on every plan, according to its pricing page.

How each one charges

List price matters less than the billing rules, which decide what you pay as your list grows.

  • Mailchimp counts unsubscribed contacts. Its help center says subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts are all included in your contact count, while archived, cleaned and deleted contacts are not. If you do not archive unsubscribes, you pay for people you cannot email.
  • Mailchimp overages. On paid plans, going over your contact or send limit continues service but adds overage charges. On the free plan, sending is paused instead.
  • Constant Contact overages. Its pricing page says sends above the monthly allowance cost $0.002 each, or $2 per 1,000.
  • Both rise in tiers. Price both tools at your current list size and at double it. That second number is usually the one that decides.

Constant Contact says prepaying for 12 months saves up to 15%. Mailchimp runs its own promotions, such as a discount for accounts with 10,000 or more contacts. Promotional pricing changes often, so screenshot the plan you choose.

Features that actually differ

  • Automation. Mailchimp’s Standard plan allows multi-step flows with branching, enough for a full welcome series, post-purchase and win-back emails. Its Essentials plan is limited to 4-step flows. Constant Contact’s automation grows by plan: one automation template on Lite, three on Standard and unlimited custom automations on Premium, according to its pricing page.
  • E-commerce. Mailchimp has deeper store integrations, product recommendations and abandoned cart flows. If online sales are your main revenue, neither is as strong as a store-focused tool such as Klaviyo.
  • Events and local promotion. Constant Contact offers event management tools, and its pricing page says every plan includes social media posting.
  • Users. Mailchimp allows 1 user on free, 3 on Essentials, 5 on Standard and unlimited on Premium. Constant Contact allows 1 user on Lite, 3 on Standard and unlimited on Premium.
  • Ease of use. Both have drag-and-drop editors and templates. Most owners can send a first campaign in an afternoon on either.

Which one fits your business

  • Tiny list, tight budget: Mailchimp’s free plan, then upgrade when automations earn their keep.
  • Service business sending a monthly newsletter and event invitations: either; Constant Contact if events and simple local promotion are the main use.
  • You want a real welcome series, follow-ups and segmentation: Mailchimp Standard or Constant Contact Standard or Premium. Compare the price at your list size.
  • Online store with most revenue from checkout: consider Klaviyo or Shopify’s own email tool instead.
  • Sales team following up leads: a CRM-based tool such as HubSpot usually fits better than either.

Questions to answer before you decide

  1. How many contacts do you have now, and how many do you expect in a year?
  2. How many unsubscribed contacts are in your current list, and will you archive them?
  3. Which automations do you need in the first six months: welcome, follow-up, birthday, abandoned cart?
  4. Which systems must connect: your website forms, online store, booking tool, CRM or point of sale?
  5. How many people on your team need their own login?
  6. Do you run events, and do you want registration handled inside your email tool?

Write the answers down and price both platforms against them. The choice is usually obvious once the numbers are side by side.

Switching between them

  1. Export contacts with status, including unsubscribes, so nobody who opted out is emailed again.
  2. Archive or delete unsubscribes you no longer need on Mailchimp so you are not paying for them.
  3. Rebuild automations first: welcome, follow-up and any date-based emails.
  4. Authenticate your sending domain on the new platform. Google requires SPF, DKIM and DMARC for bulk senders and asks for spam complaint rates below 0.3%.
  5. Warm up by sending to your most engaged contacts first, then everyone.
  6. Reconnect forms on your website so new signups land in the new account.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing on the entry price alone. The 500-contact price is irrelevant if you have 4,000 contacts.
  • Paying for unsubscribes. On Mailchimp, clean up regularly.
  • Buying the top plan for features nobody will use. Start on the middle plan and upgrade for a specific need.
  • Ignoring integrations. Check that your website forms, store, booking tool or CRM connect natively before you sign up.
