Moving From Magento 1 to Magento 2
If you’re on Magento 1.x, and assessing what to do next, you’re in good company. Many thousands of merchants are in the process of deciding what to do, as Magento 1 prepares to ride off into the sunset.
Leaving your old M1 store requires a full replatforming or rebuild, as there is no upgrade available to go from Magento 1, Community or Enterprise Edition, to any other platform.
Many merchants will of course migrate to Magento 2. While Magento 2 requires a new theme, new extensions, and other setup to launch, much like any Magento build, if you’re happy with your experience with Magento 1, chances are that you’ll look to migrate from Magento 1 to Magento 2. On the other hand, if you aren’t happy with Magento 1, this is your opportunity to consider other options. Magento is open source, has a wealth of extensions and connectors available, and is fairly robust. However, it also requires more maintenance than many platforms, comes with limited support from Magento (if any), and requires you to maintain a range of 3rd party services and software, from hosting to extensions. Unless you have the budget for Magento Cloud, a pricy option, you have no service level agreement, and can expect to need to manage some technical issues, whether extension conflicts, hosting issues, security issues and PCI Compliance, and security and software updates. That is also keeping in mind that there are a couple of thousand reported issues with Magento 2 that the Magento team is still working on, and more issues be reported regularly.
Magento 2 will be a great fit for many merchants, but not nearly all. For many, other platforms will bring better predictability, stability, and less costly setup and maintenance.
